The Beechwoods are split into two sections. you will reach the new plantation first, planted in 1992.

The new plantation. Great for building dens.

The original Beechwoods themselves were planted on arable land in the 1840s. Disease and gales have taken their toll on the original beech trees but saplings have sprung up in the gaps. Look out for the carving of a wizard’s face in a tree trunk near the entrance and listen out for woodpeckers. There’s a noticeboard telling you things to look out for.

Fun facts

Beneath the beech trees, white helleborine orchids thrive on the dry chalky soil, pushing up flowering spikes in spring before the beech leaves cast their shade.
